Home insurance cover comes in two parts – buildings insurance and contents insurance. You can choose either one or both of these based on your needs.
Buildings cover insures your properties bricks and mortar for events like fire and storm damage, while contents cover could protect your belongings against problems like theft, damage and loss. Buying a combined policy, buildings and contents, from the same insurer is normally cheaper than getting two separate policies.
If you’re a homeowner, most mortgage lenders insist on you having buildings cover in place to protect their investment. You don’t usually need buildings cover if you’re renting, but you may want contents insurance to help cover the cost of replacing your possessions if you suffer a loss.
As a rule of thumb, anything you'd take with you if you moved house should be included on your contents policy - including items like curtains and carpets. It's worth taking the time to go around your house from room to room and putting a reasonable value on everything. It's easy to underestimate the value of your contents, but it’s important to make sure you’re not underinsured.
Our standard home insurance may not offer the correct levels of cover if you let your property or are a landlord. If you’d like a quote for a property you own but rent out to tenants, please contact us for a landlord insurance quote.
Yes – providing you have a credit or debit card or the facility to pay by Direct Debit we can issue you with immediate cover. This is subject to normal terms and conditions.
All home insurance policies come with a compulsory excess – the amount you have to pay towards the cost of any claim. On top of this, you can opt to pay a voluntary excess, which may bring costs down. The temptation is to set your voluntary excess high, hoping to save money on your premium. This may work in the short term, but please make sure you can afford to pay this excess if you have to make a claim.

You can pay using most major credit or debit card or by monthly or annual Direct Debit. If you pay annually we'll collect your first premium on the date you purchase the policy, not the cover start date.

If you are or are planning to renovate or extend your house you need to make sure that you still have enough cover. Call us on 0330 606 2500 to discuss your cover level before you start work on your property.
We'll send you a renewal notice 3 to 4 weeks before your renewal date. This will contain information about your premium and your cover.
Direct debit renewal: Check that the information on the renewal notice, renewal letter and finance letter is correct. Unless you need to make amendments to your details you do not need to contact us as your direct debit renewal will be processed 3 working days before your renewal date to ensure continuous cover.
Annual Payment Renewal: To renew your policy you will need to call us before your renewal date with a credit or debit card or send your payment details to us before the renewal date in the pre paid envelope provided with your renewal letter.

If you cancel before your policy is due to start we will return any premium you have paid in full.
If you cancel within 14 days of the day it is due to start or of the day on which you receive your documents (whichever is later) we'll return any premium you've paid less an administration fee of up to £25.00 (inclusive of Insurance Premium Tax where applicable), provided you've not made a claim during that time.
If you cancel your policy after that 14 day period we'll return any unused premium less an administration fee of up to £25.00 (inclusive of Insurance Premium Tax where applicable), provided you've not made a claim during the current period of insurance.
